Biography

Gordon McMillan of Lot 17, Concession 6, was a Gunner. At some point during his service, he wrote, in part, this letter to his mother from “somewhere in Germany:” “I am now in Germany and it sure is different from being in a friendly country all the time. I have not seen very many civilians yet, but the ones I have seen sure look mean and hostile. I wouldn’t trust any of them as far as I could throw a bull by the horns, so we just don’t take any chances with them. The chickens and pigs are sure catching it now and also the canned fruit. When our units move into a place, it is only a couple of days before there aren’t any more chickens running around. Almost everybody tries his hand at it. Almost every cellar is well stocked with coal and preserved fruit and vegetables of all kinds. I have seen no sign of any starvation yet. I’m sure that the people I’ve seen so far were a lot better dressed and fed than a lot of people I know in England and most certainly a lot better than the people of Holland.”
