Operation Desert Storm

During Operation Desert Storm, the 1991 liberation of Kuwait, Canada launched Operation Friction, involving 4,500 Canadian Forces personnel being deployed to the Persian Gulf between August 1990 and February 1991. Several Canadian naval ships and CF-18 Hornets and CH-124 Sea Kings were deployed as well as the 1st Canadian Field Hospital (from Petawawa) and Air Command’s Transport Group. Commodore Kenneth J. Summers of St. Thomas, Ontario, commanded the Canadian Forces HQ in the Middle East in Bahrain.
