Biography

Melvin Boles (born 1917) of 121 Commissioner St., Embro,Ontario, was a radio operator with the U. S. Merchant Marines. In 1942 he was assigned to the S. S. Calobre, a cargo vessel under Panamanian registry. That assignment took him from New York City to England, Scotland, Iceland, Ireland and Russia,  before returning to NYC. Some of these voyages were under fire from enemy destroyers. Mel later worked for the Royal Air Force’s Ferry Command, and was based in Nassau.

Mel was married to Amy Pinder. Mel died September 12, 2011 in Scarborough, and  was buried in North Embro Cemetery, October 8, 2011,
