Biography

Flight Officer Winnifred Vining was a daughter of Elizabeth Agnes Duffin and James Gordon Vining. Before she enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, she was teaching at SS #4 Uniondale School.   She was one of 40 women selected for trade training at No.1, Fighter Command School, USA Air Force, in Orlando, Florida. There she trained to monitor aircraft in flight, a task which was highly secretive work at that time.  She worked at Filter Operations Room in Halifax, Nova Scotia and later in Newfoundland with her sister Jean. At the request of the Directorate of Intelligence, she was posted to Air Force Headquarters in Ottawa in late 1944. Her final posting was to No. 2 Air Convalescent Hospital outside Hamilton, Ontario where she was the Administrative Officer.  There she met and married Flight Officer Paul Giguere.
